Elm and ash
This piece has its roots in the tradition of stick chairs found all over Wales, which are undergoing something of a popular renaissance today for makers eager to emmulate the craft.
Straight-grained ash has been used for the sticks, stretchers and legs for its inherent strength and flexibility. These parts are shaped by hand on a shave horse with draw knives, spokeshaves and bench planes to create tapered octagonal facets.
The elm seat has been hollowed out using an adze, followed by a scorp, a travisher and finally cabinet scrapers for a smooth finish.
All of the joints are held with traditional wedged mortise and tenon joinery, holding the chair's integral structure together firmly and under tension.
